The child's progress in education is monitored by the teachers of Horizon Lanka Academy who have been assigned specific responsibility for them.
After receiving the MicroScholarship the student is required to keep the sponsor informed of his/her progress. In addition, the child sends a regular report to the project administration.
An important feature of MicroScholarships is that every child in the project is asked to supplement the family income in some manner. A choice given is to grow a plot of vegetables. Additionally, the child is required to plant and look after at least ten teak saplings. Cultivation is second nature to the kids at Mahavilachchiya and a teak tree is ready for the timber market in just twenty years.
